Just half an hour's drive from the capital Argostoli, Lourdas Bay nestles beneath the dramatic slopes that cascade down from Mount Aenos to the golden sands and sparkling blue seas below. Covered in olive groves, vineyards and stands of cypress trees, the foothills skirt the gently shelving beaches that stretch from Spartia in the west to Lourdas itself in the east.
The sprinkling of small hamlets which sit amongst these hills are all relatively quiet, with many offering little more than a mini market, perhaps a bakery and, of course, the obligatory taverna. The atmosphere is unhurried and unspoilt, the locals are endearingly friendly and the views across to Zakynthos are spectacular.
Whilst definitely not for those seeking lively late night bars and clubs, the area does provide a good choice of restaurants and tavernas, many of which - like La Mer with its excellent food and stunning views of the bay - are popular with visitors and residents alike.
