This cottage is over a hundred years old and as such its layout, rooms and furnishings reflect its history and distinctiveness. It was originally used as living quarters for the monks and caretakers of the now uninhabited monastery. The rooms are lovingly furnished and decorated with family heirlooms.
There are three separate entrances on the ground floor. One door leads you to the kitchen, which has a washing machine, and through al hall to a separate shower room with WC and basin. Through the second door you will find an air-conditioned twin bedroom. The third and front door leads you into the living room which contains a fireplace and original Skopelitian furniture. To allow for privacy, this entire first floor can be closed by dividing doors as each have their own separate entrance. However, as all rooms are connected, it can also be used as one large living space.
On the first floor there is a double bedroom and a master bedroom. Both are air-conditioned and the master bedroom contains an antique, king-sized four-poster bed. The floor has polished wooden floors, open beamed ceilings and French doors opening onto two balconies. Whilst the front balcony looks out on the hillside and towards the sea, the back balcony looks up towards the monastery and bell tower of Agios Riginos. The furnished terrace (next to which is a shower room with WC) on this balcony has spectacular views: the monastery to one side, the private swimming pool below and rolling hillsides covered with olive trees leading down to the sea.
The name Aletri comes from the word 'plough' and you can find some of the farming tools used by the monks to one side of the house. To the other side, you will discover the barbeque and pool area under the pergola, as well as the lovely views down the valley towards Skopelos. At the far end of the pool is a fresh water spring, whose gentle bubbling provides the only sound amid the tranquil splendour of Aletri Cottage.
Please note: due to the steepness of the inside stairway, the upstairs is not suitable for unaccompanied small children or people with walking difficulties. However, the grounds are perfect for children of all ages, with plenty of space to play and explore.
A cot and high chair are available on request, at a charge of 5 euros per day payable locally.
When booking Aletri Cottage you will be given the option to book return transfers between Skopelos and Skiathos Airport. If booked you will be met at Skiathos airport by a SunIsle rep and taxied to the port for the ferry/hydrofoil to Skopelos, where another SunIsle rep will be waiting. Please also note that a local charge of 35 Euros applies for arrivals on Skopelos from 19.00 onwards.
Aletri Cottage is situated approximately 3km from town, therefore it is perfect for those who want the sort of seclusion found in the countryside, as well as the amenies in a town only a 5-minute drive away.
Other than the monastery itself, Aletri sits high and alone on the hill overlooking the entire valley to the sea below. Aletri is also ideal for walkers and hikers as the walk to town takes only about 30 minutes. Walking in the opposite direction across the hills to the other side of the island is one of the popular walks undertaken by visitors to the island.
Heading up and over the pine covered hilltops and down the other side brings you to the sandy beach of Limnonari and further on to the exquisite little fishing village of Agnondas. Here is a waterfront lined with fish tavernas, a small beach and crystal clear water for swimming. This walk takes approximately 1 hour 15 minutes with easy bus connection for the return to town if necessary.
The fact that there is no airport on Skopelos can only enhance your holiday as it means that none of the big package holiday companies go there.
To get to Skopelos you fly to Skiathos from either Birmingham, East Midlands, Gatwick, Manchester or Newcastle with most flights departing on Fridays. From Skiathos you take the Flying Dolphin which takes approx. 1 hour to reach Skopelos.
You will be met at Skiathos Airport where a taxi will be waiting to take you to the port for the next available hydrofoil or ferry. Another representative awaits your arrival on Skopelos.
