Kamari, situated on the southeast side of Santorini, was completely rebuilt after the 1956 earthquake. The town has spread along its two-mile beach with bars/tavernas and souvenir shops creating a colourful and lively seafront. The area is famous for its beautiful beach extends all the way to Monolithos and for its green landscape.
The official name of the village is "Episkopi Gonia" and took its name from the interesting church of Panaghia Episkopi which was built in 1100. The best time to visit the church is on August 15th during the feast of the Virgin Mary when the church celebrates with a large festival. Also, on September 24th the church Panagia Myrtidiotissa, celebrates with festival where the food and the wine is plentiful.
This established resort offers a variety of tavernas to suit all tastes and at night the town comes alive with music bars, clubs and 'live' shows but nothing too rowdy. English and German-owned bars are a rarity.
The volcanic black sand is extremely heat absorbant and therefore impossible to walk on barefoot. The beach shelves quiet steeply making it ideal for adult swimmers, but less suited to young children.
Also known as Thera or Thira, Santorini is the southernmost member of the Cyclades group of islands. It is essentially what remains of an enormous volcanic explosion, destroying the earliest settlements on what was formerly a single island. Its spectacular physical beauty, along with beautiful winding streets and whitewashed buildings, have made the island rightly famous.
