Fira has been the capital of Santorini since early in the 19th century. Perched on the edge of an impressive cliff, Fira offers a great panorama over the submerged volcano. This is where the famous whitewashed houses can be found in stepped streets with blue domed churches and sun-bathed verandas. Visit the main square, Theotokopoulou Square, and watch the locals going about their daily business. The small streets reveal all manner of treasures from various local shops, jewelleries, cafe, restaurants, bars and night clubs.
Also known as Thera or Thira, Santorini is the southernmost member of the Cyclades group of islands. It is essentially what remains of an enormous volcanic explosion, destroying the earliest settlements on what was formerly a single island. Its spectacular physical beauty, along with beautiful winding streets and whitewashed buildings, have made the island rightly famous.
