People on holiday in Skiathos could find their money goes further than on previous trips abroad, as a survey has revealed prices have fallen by up to 42 per cent across countries in Europe.

The cost of vacationing in these hotspots has reduced while trips to the US have increased 31 per cent in price according to Post Office Travel Money who calculated the differing costs of ten specific tourist items in each of the popular regions.

Aside from Italy which remained the same all of the European countries surveyed in the Holiday Barometer Chart were found to be lower on expense than in 2009.

"The good news for UK holidaymakers planning trips to the eurozone is that the ... Barometer reveals cost reductions in most of the eurozone destinations," Sarah Munro, the head of Post Office Travel Money commented.

She explained that the cost of dining out is where the biggest reduction could be seen and that restaurants are offering deals in order to compete for business.

Leaving booking until as late as possible was recently recommended by Nick Trend of travel portal Simonseeks.com who advised that this is when people can get the best deals.
