Things to do in Santorini: Fira's sunset rituals

Cafes, terraces and tavernas fill with both residents and tourists as the Santorini sunset ritual takes its nightly hold on the town of Fira, a travel writer has described.
Rachel de Carlos recounted the phenomenon that occurs every evening about an hour before the sun sets on Santorini as people leave their cottages and villas to witness the natural phenomenon over the famous volcano.
"There is an almost ritualistic gathering in the coffee houses and bars … the narrow promenade on the cliff's edge is filled with island visitors and residents," she wrote for the Examiner.
Once the "spectacular" sunset has subsided, visitors can enjoy the thriving nightlife.
"There is no need to look for entertainment, because … the tavernas are everywhere. Eating and socialising is the way of life in the evening," she added.
These meals take time, she said and include local wine and many local produce as well as grilled meat or fish.
Santorini white wine varietals recently caught the attention of connoisseur Thomas Caestecker, who praised their diversity and finesse.
He gave special attention to the local Moshofilero, recommending it as light enough to accompany meals but flavourful enough to serve as a nice aperitif.
