Those who are on holiday in Santorini should sample the local wine, according to one writer.
Olly Smith, wine writer for the Daily Mail, said the island's vineyards are situated on volcanic soil thereby creating "intensely flavoured wines with striking personality".
"After the eruption that took place around 1500BC, the island was covered in ash and pumice, which laid the foundations for some of the world's most unique vineyards," he said.
"The local white grape variety Assyrtiko copes amazingly growing in the volcanic soil, with living vines woven into basket shapes to keep them cool, producing zinging white wines of serious intensity and class."
Moisture from the sea mist gives the wines a "bone-dry salty tang," added Mr Smith.
People are advised to look out for the sweet Vinsanto wines of Canava Argyros, a wine produced by fermenting the grapes after drying them in the hot sun.
