Things to do in Kefalonia: St Gerassimos Monastery

The St Gerassimos Monastery in Omala, Kefalonia could be a nice trip for anyone on a Greek holiday.

A small church, the structure sits on the tomb and former living space of the patron saint, who was ordained as a monk and arrived on the island in 1555.

Gerassimos then rebuilt a chapel in 1560 in the Omala valley and sought peace.

It is believed he built many wells at the monastery, where people visit to see his relics now kept in a silver sarcophagus, according to the Kefalonia Travel Guide.

Other recommended sights to see on the island include the Theodore Lighthouse in Argostoli and the bustling atmosphere of Lassi.

Fans of Captain Corelli's Mandolin may know that the film, which was based on the popular book, was shot in Kefalonia - so taking a trip across the region to experience the gorgeous backdrops might be great fun for those who want to see where it was created.
