Greek island Corfu holiday 'most memorable trip'

In the Guardian column Incredible Journey, the Greek island of Corfu has been noted as one writer's most memorable holiday experience.

David Evans wrote that the trip he took in 1981 with his family - "two beautiful weeks in Corfu" - was unforgettable.

Not only was it the first sojourn abroad they had taken, the local culture made it an especially colourful experience.

The family had rented a Fiat 500 to better explore the island.

"One of our jaunts led us to visit the monastery perched perilously on the top of the mountain overlooking the town," he wrote.

"We set off ... wending our way through leafy villages, each with its own taverna."

The writer went on to recount how they were flagged down by a group of men looking to negotiate a ride for a monk.

His family and the monk may well have been on their way to the Paleokastritsa Monastery.

This Byzantine structure brings in crowds for its fascinating architecture and the coastal vistas afforded by its mountain-top positioning.
