Santorini 2008 Sigalas wine 'has an edge'

Wine connoisseurs planning holidays might like to book flights to Santorini, as the region's volcanic earth has been applauded for producing "extraordinary" examples of the tipple.

According to Bill Zacharkiw of the Montreal Gazette, the Santorini 2008 Sigalas white wine boasts "intense rockiness with a hint of citrus" and is one of the "more distinctive" drinks of the "acidity-based whites" that there are.

He went on to recommend that potential consumers pair the beverage with seafood such as mussels and oysters.

However, Mr Zacharkiw also paid tribute to Domaine Katsaros, a Greek red, saying that it is "great now" and will be "for years to come", thanks to its subtleties of flavour, which include herbs and blackberry.

The Daily Mail's Olly Smith recently made similar comments, referring to the soil in Santorini, which became prime wine-producing land following an eruption around 1500BC that led to the region being coated in pumice and ash.
