People on a summer holiday in Greece may be encouraged to speak to the local citizens after one expert suggested residents can give the best insight in to a region.

Simon Calder, travel editor of the Independent, explained that the best way to find information on what to see and do is to speak to people who live in the town or village and know it best.

He urged individuals to be adventurous when abroad and explore new destinations, stating that the easiest way to do so is to talk to those who live there rather than just relying on internet research.

"The first rule of any traveller is to ask and if you do that people are generally very happy to help you," the specialist stated.

Mr Calder was commenting in response to a study by Orlando Tourism that found that only 21 per cent of British holidaymakers engage with the local public while on holiday.

Another way to get invaluable holiday advice is to use a specialist holiday company that has local knowledge about yor holiday destination. It has been advised that you should ask as many questions as you feel appropriate before booking a holiday and that you should receive adequate responses to each of your points.
